What Is Altcoin Season in Crypto?
Bitcoin runs first. Always. Dominance rises. Altcoins trail behind looking irrelevant.
Then Bitcoin stabilizes. Investors who made money on BTC start hunting bigger moves. Capital rotates. ETH picks up. Then major altcoins. Then mid-caps. Then some memecoin nobody heard of last Tuesday doing 50x.
That's altcoin season.
The Rotation Order
ETH moves first. Then large caps, SOL, XRP, BNB. Then mid-caps. Small-caps and memecoins last.
By the time memecoins are running on every Telegram channel and your group chat won't stop posting gains, early money is already rotating back out. People find altcoin season when it's nearly over. Buy small-caps at the exact moment smart money heads for the exit. Classic.
How to Actually Confirm It
Bitcoin dominance falling while total market cap rises. That's the rotation signal. BTC's share of total crypto market cap dropping means capital moving into altcoins. CoinMarketCap and TradingView show the chart.
Altcoin Season Index above 75. Tracks top 100 coins against Bitcoin over 90 days. 75% outperforming confirms it officially. April 2021 the index hit 98. Almost everything beating Bitcoin simultaneously.
What Recent Cycles Looked Like
- BTC dominance dropped from 70% to 38%. DeFi, NFTs, memecoins, Solana exploding. Total crypto market hit $3 trillion. Then most altcoins lost 80-95% from peak over the following year.
- Altseason arrived around November. ETH, SOL, XRP all approached all time highs. Some smaller tokens up over 150,000%. Then Bitcoin reclaimed dominance and it ended.
- Never really came. Bitcoin hit a new all time high of $126,000. Dominance stayed elevated most of the year. Index touched 78 briefly in September. Back to 20 by December. Bitcoin season basically the whole year.
Why Altcoin Season Ends Badly for Late Buyers
The gains look real because they are real, for whoever got in early. The problem is the narrative catches up to the price, not the other way around.
By the time mainstream crypto media is running headlines about altcoin season and Telegram groups are sharing 10x gains daily, the rotation is deep into its final stage. Small-cap tokens with no fundamentals are running purely on attention. Liquidity is thin. The same money that drove prices up can exit faster than new buyers can replace it.
This is why altcoin season produces more blown accounts than bull markets. People see the gains, size up, buy near the top, and hold through the inevitable reversal back to Bitcoin dominance. A token up 500% in two weeks can give back 80% in four days. At that point waiting for recovery is a different bet entirely, one made on a project that usually had no substance to begin with.
How to Position Before It Starts
The traders who profit most from altcoin season aren't buying during it. They're accumulating during Bitcoin dominance peaks, when altcoins look dead and nobody wants them.
Watch dominance for a sustained rollover. Watch for ETH to start outperforming BTC on a weekly timeframe. That's usually the first signal the rotation has started. Getting into mid-caps before they show up on the gainers list is the entire game. By the time they're trending, the easy move is already behind you.
