Bitcoin Dominance Explained
Bitcoin's share of the entire crypto market. One percentage. Updated constantly.
Bitcoin worth $1 trillion. Total crypto $2 trillion. Dominance 50%. Simple math. Meaningful signal.
What the Number Actually Tells You
Dominance rising means Bitcoin outperforming everything else. New money entering crypto going into BTC. Existing holders rotating back from altcoins. Happened through most of 2024 and 2025. Bitcoin hitting all time highs while altcoins mostly went sideways or down relative to it.
Dominance falling while total market cap rises is the one worth getting excited about. Capital leaving Bitcoin for altcoins. Both things happening simultaneously. That combination is what altcoin seasons are built on. 2021 saw dominance drop from 70% to 38% while total market exploded to $3 trillion. Every altcoin seemed to go up. Some went up a lot.
Dominance falling while total market also falls is different entirely. Bear market. Altcoins just dying faster than Bitcoin. Looks similar on the dominance chart. Feels very different in the portfolio.
Context of total market cap is everything. Dominance alone answers half the question.
The History Worth Knowing
- ICO boom. Every week a new token raising millions. Dominance crashed from 86% to below 40%. Felt permanent at the time. New paradigm. Then everything collapsed and two years of pain followed. Dominance climbed back above 60%.
- DeFi summer. NFT explosion. Solana from nothing to top five. Dominance dropped to 38% in April. Altcoin season index hit 98. Nearly every top 100 coin outperforming Bitcoin simultaneously. Then the cycle turned. Most altcoins lost 80-95% peak to trough. Dominance recovered again.
2024-2025. Bitcoin ETF approval in January 2024. Something shifted. Dominance climbed past 60% and stayed there even as Bitcoin hit $126,000 all time high in October 2025. Altcoin season index briefly touched altseason territory in September 2025 then fell back to 20 by December. Bitcoin season basically the whole year. The old pattern of Bitcoin running then rotating to alts didn't play out the same way.
Why the Old Rotation Pattern May Be Changing
Every cycle from 2017 through 2021 followed roughly the same script. Bitcoin runs first. Dominance peaks. Capital rotates into ETH. Then down the market cap ladder. Altcoin season follows Bitcoin season like clockwork.
2024 and 2025 broke that pattern. Bitcoin ETF approval brought in a different type of capital. Institutional money, pension funds, wealth managers allocating through regulated products. That money buys Bitcoin. It doesn't rotate into Solana memecoins six months later. It stays in Bitcoin because that's what the product holds.
The result was sustained dominance above 60% even as Bitcoin hit all-time highs. The rotation that retail traders were waiting for, the one that historically made altcoin holders rich, arrived late and weak compared to previous cycles. Some altcoins ran. Most didn't. The broad altcoin season that defined 2021 didn't materialize in the same way.
Whether this is a permanent structural shift or just a delayed cycle is genuinely unknown. Worth factoring into how you interpret dominance signals going forward.
How Traders Actually Use Dominance
Dominance is a macro filter, not a trade signal. It tells you which environment you're operating in, not when to buy or sell specific assets.
High and rising dominance means Bitcoin is the trade. Altcoin positions face headwinds. Even good projects underperform BTC in this environment. Sizing altcoin exposure down and Bitcoin exposure up aligns with where capital is actually flowing.
Dominance peaking and rolling over, especially with rising total market cap, means the environment is shifting. Altcoin exposure starts making more sense. The signal isn't perfect and it lags, but it's based on actual capital flows rather than sentiment or predictions.
Falling dominance with falling total market cap is the trap. Looks like altcoin season starting on the dominance chart. Actually means altcoins are just collapsing faster than Bitcoin. Buying altcoins because dominance is falling in a bear market is one of the more reliable ways to accelerate losses.
Where to Track It
TradingView has the dominance chart under the ticker BTC.D. CoinMarketCap shows it on their global charts page updated in real time. Pair it with the total market cap chart, labeled TOTAL on TradingView, and the altcoin market cap excluding Bitcoin and Ethereum, labeled TOTAL3. Those three charts together give a complete picture of where capital is sitting and where it might be moving.
