Crypto Token Supply Explained
Supply in crypto is about how many coins or tokens are out there. Not a single number though. There are three distinct measurements, and confusing them leads to expensive mistakes.
The Three Types of Supply
Circulating Supply
Coins actually on the market right now. Held, traded, and used by real people. This is the number in the market cap formula: Price * Circulating Supply = Market Cap.
Total Supply
Everything created or mined to date. Includes tokens locked in smart contracts, parked in team wallets, or reserved for later. These coins exist. Not all of them are actively circulating.
Max Supply
The absolute ceiling. The maximum number of coins that can ever exist. Bitcoin caps at 21 million. Some cryptos like Ethereum have no fixed maximum.
Why the Gap Between Circulating and Max Supply Matters
New project: 100 million tokens circulating, 1 billion max supply. That means only 10% of all tokens are on the market. The remaining 90% sit in vesting contracts, staking pools, or team wallets, waiting for release.
If those 900 million tokens flood the market without matching demand growth, your position gets diluted. More supply chasing the same amount of buyer interest drags the price down.
Hidden inflation. Market cap might hold steady, but each individual token becomes worth less as the supply balloon inflates.
Bitcoin as a Benchmark
Bitcoin's supply numbers are exceptionally clean.
- Circulating: ~19.99 million BTC
- Total: ~19.99 million BTC
- Max: 21 million BTC
Over 95% of all Bitcoin that will ever exist is already out there. The rest trickles out through mining rewards over the next hundred years. No developer sitting on a secret pile that could crash the market overnight.
That transparent, predictable schedule is a major reason Bitcoin dominates. Investors know exactly what they're working with.
What to Check Before You Buy
Compare circulating supply to max supply. Always. If only a fraction of tokens currently circulate, find out when and how the rest unlock.
Look for vesting schedules, token unlock dates, emission rates. A token with 10% circulating supply and a 20% cliff unlock three months away? That supply could triple overnight. Not a buying opportunity. That's a dilution bomb with a timer.
