Paper Hands in Crypto
Sell at the first sign of pressure.
Token dips 15%. Paper hands sells. Market goes red. Paper hands exits. Scary headline drops. Paper hands out before reading it properly.
Opposite of diamond hands. Low conviction. Quick exit. Usually mocked in crypto communities as weakness.
Came from the same WallStreetBets culture as diamond hands. Paper crumples under pressure. Diamond doesn't. Community shorthand for someone who couldn't hold through volatility.
When Paper Hands Is Actually Correct
Gets mocked constantly. Sometimes the paper hands trader was right.
LUNA May 2022. First signs of UST depeg appeared. Paper hands sold immediately. Diamond hands held through the death spiral. Paper hands kept their money. Diamond hands watched it go to zero.
FTX token November 2022. Early withdrawal rumors. Paper hands pulled funds off exchange immediately. Diamond hands trusted SBF's reassurances. Paper hands kept their funds. Diamond hands lost everything.
Selling quickly on genuine warning signs isn't weakness. It's pattern recognition and risk management. Problem is distinguishing real warning signs from normal volatility in real time. That's the hard part.
The Psychology Behind It
Paper hands usually comes from one of two places.
Position sized too large. Token drops 20% and it's affecting sleep. Selling because the emotional weight is too heavy not because the thesis changed. Solution is smaller position sizing before entry not selling during the drop.
No actual conviction in the trade. Bought because of hype or FOMO. Never had a real thesis. First sign of trouble and there's nothing to hold onto mentally. Sells because there was no reason to hold in the first place.
Both fixable before the trade opens. Both feel identical from the outside as paper hands.
