What Is Narrative in Crypto?
The story the market is telling itself about what matters right now.
Not revenue. Not user numbers. The theme that has capital flowing toward a specific category of tokens because enough people believe it simultaneously.
AI tokens early 2023. Didn't matter if the projects had working AI. Had AI in the name or whitepaper. Price went up. Market decided AI plus crypto was the future. That belief attracted capital. Capital moved price. Price attracted more capital. Self-fulfilling until it wasn't.
That's a narrative. Becomes real because enough people act like it's real. Until they stop.
The Cycle
Every narrative runs through roughly the same phases. Doesn't always look the same in real time but the structure repeats.
Quiet accumulation. Few people notice. Early participants buy tokens in the sector before anyone is talking about it publicly. No hype. No articles. Just a handful of people who see something forming.
Recognition. Someone names it. Crypto Twitter picks up the term. Articles appear. Capital starts flowing more visibly. Tokens in the sector move together. People notice the correlation and start connecting the dots.
Euphoria. Everyone talking about it. Projects with no real connection to the narrative rebrand themselves to get exposure. FOMO across Telegram. Capital floods in from people who noticed late but want in anyway.
Exhaustion. No new buyers. Early holders who've been sitting on gains since the quiet phase start exiting into whatever demand remains. Price gets choppy. Narrative tokens stop making new highs even on good news.
Rotation. Capital leaves. Next narrative starts its quiet phase somewhere else.
The Ones That Actually Ran
- Play to Earn 2021. Axie Infinity hits $160. Scholarship programs emerge. Real people in the Philippines earning wages from a game. Seemed like proof of concept for the whole narrative. Token eventually went below $0.20 as the economics unraveled. The narrative was real. The sustainability wasn't.
- AI tokens 2023. ChatGPT hits mainstream. Every crypto project suddenly has an AI angle. AGIX, FET, RNDR. Projects building quietly for years suddenly had their narrative moment arrive. Significant gains. Then the narrative rotated and most gave back a large chunk.
- Memecoins 2024. WIF, BONK, PEPE, BRETT. Solana became headquarters. No utility needed. The narrative was the joke itself. Community, culture, pure speculation. Captured billions.
Why Narrative Beats Fundamentals and Why That's Annoying
Most crypto has no cash flows. No earnings. Traditional valuation doesn't apply.
Price moves on sentiment. Sentiment follows stories. Capital flows to whatever story is most compelling right now.
Token with strong narrative and weak fundamentals beats token with strong fundamentals and no narrative. Consistently. This drives people from traditional finance absolutely crazy. Makes complete sense once you accept that crypto pricing reflects attention and future expectations not present value.
The best setup is when both align. Project doing something genuinely useful that also fits the dominant market story. Speculators and believers entering simultaneously. Those are the ones that run furthest and hold gains longest.
